From Earle Arkansas, the next town to the west is Parkin, AR. Traveling the main hwy, Parkin is 3.5 miles up the road. However, taking the back road, Parkin is 7 miles away.
Every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, I wasn’t in school or had anything to do; I would ride my bike the entire 7 miles then catch a ride back. And from time to time, I would even paddled back totaling 14miles. Peddling from Earle to Parkin and back was a three hour trip.
How I long for those rides. The sound of crickets, the song of birds, the smell of honeysuckles, and dogs barking as I passed homes painted by many seasons of rain and wind. In one yard dwelled a handful of cows, and from time to time they would stand at the fence as I passed by.
Me being me, I would call out to them, talking to them as if they were people. “Hi you doing”, I would say and they just stood there. One day for whatever reason, a scripture came to my head. “LET EVERYTHING THAT HAS BREATH PRAISE THE LORD”…
Jumping from my bike, I approached the fence I stood within inches of one lone beautiful black and white cow. That day, feeling as if I could move mountains, I decided to test my faith with the cow. I walked ever so close, looked the cow in her eyes and I said, “The bible says, Everything that has breath praise the LORD”…
That cow looked at me as if to roll her eyes, then she nodded her head and turned and walked away… She never did make a sound. I was looking for a grunt or something. She just turned and walked away with her tail swinging as if shooing flies. I hopped back on my bike and peddled away, and as I peddled, I noticed a beautiful yellow blue and black butterfly flying beside me.
I long for life in the country, just one more time….
